ECTS

Abbreviation for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System

In short and in plain language

The ECTS is a system of points for studies in Europe.

Students get points for what they learn and do in their course.

A university can count points that a student got at another one.

A full year of study gives 60 points.

Definition
The ECTS is a tool of the European Higher Education Area that makes studies and courses more transparent. It allows credits taken at one higher education institution to be counted towards a qualification studied for at another. According to the European Commission, 60 ECTS credits are the equivalent of a full year of study.
