The Homepage of a Trade Business

Almost every visitor lands here first. We build the homepage so that your trade, your service area and a way to get in touch sit in the first screen, with everything else following in the order people actually ask about it.

In short and in plain language

This page is about the homepage of your business. Almost every visitor sees it first.

We write the texts, and you read them through. For the photos, we come with you to your site.

The homepage is the one page nearly every visitor sees. It decides whether somebody taps the phone number or goes back to the list of search results. This page describes how we build a homepage for a trade business: which six sections carry it, in what order they belong, what has to sit at the very top and what can safely wait further down.

What has to be answered in the first seconds

The visitor you want is rarely sitting at a desk. He is standing in a cellar in front of a dripping connection, holding a neighbour's note, or looking in the evening for a firm to handle next spring's conversion. In all three cases the order is the same: the trade first, then the location, then the question of whether you do this particular job. Only after that does it matter who you are. If the location hides behind the imprint link instead of sitting in the header, the chain breaks at question two.

This is not a guess about taste, it is an observation about effort. 89 percent (Bitkom) of trade businesses report that customers increasingly expect individual offers, and 74 percent (Bitkom) find that customers have become more critical. Critical people compare, and people who compare already have the next firm open in a second tab. A homepage therefore gets no second chance to supply its basic facts.

The trade in plain words

Not "your partner for all things house", but electrical work, plumbing and heating, roofing or joinery. Hide your trade and you get called by people who need something else.

Town and radius

Where the business sits and how far you travel. Two lines save you calls every week from areas you would not drive to anyway.

The phone number as a button

Tapped on a phone, not copied out by hand. The number belongs in the header, not exclusively in the footer.

A form without a detour

For everyone who will not ring at ten in the evening. Few fields, but the right ones: what, where, from when, and how you may call back.

Your own work instead of symbols

A stock motif proves nothing. Six photos of your finished jobs with town and year answer the question of competence without a single line of copy.

Hours and emergency cover

When somebody picks up the phone, whether there is a call-out service and what it costs. Vague availability produces exactly the calls nobody can take.

Which businesses we build these homepages for

We work for trade businesses with roughly three to forty people, mostly around Hildesheim, Hanover, Brunswick and Peine. The typical client has a full order book but the wrong enquiries in it, or has been living for years with a site that falls apart on a phone. The trades we already know are listed under Sectors; how an existing site is replaced is described under Website relaunch.

Two views of the same page

Visitors ask four things, in this order

People do not read a homepage, they skim it looking for a reason to continue. The four questions always arrive in the same sequence: right trade, reachable distance, matching job, workable way to get in touch. We arrange the sections around those questions rather than around what a business considers important internally. A mission statement matters, but it answers none of the four and therefore does not belong at the top.

  • Trade and town in the first line, not buried in the menu
  • Service area with a distance in kilometres instead of "and surroundings"
  • Services named the way callers name them on the phone
  • A way to get in touch from anywhere on the page, not only at the bottom
Order of the questionsbroad before narrow
Have I landed on the right trade1
Do they travel out to my address2
Do they do exactly this job3
How do I get in touch now4
Every unanswered question costs the next step. That is why the broadest question sits at the very top and not in the menu.

The first screen carries six facts, no more

On a phone held upright the visible area is smaller than a postcard. What sits there decides the rest. We put six facts into it and deliberately leave everything else out: no sliding banner with five messages, no overlay covering half the screen, no welcome text running over two paragraphs. How this looks across different trades is shown in the design examples.

  • Business name and trade with no marketing word in between
  • Town and radius, so the distance question is settled at once
  • Phone number and form directly next to each other
  • One real photo from the business instead of a bought motif

From the first conversation to going live

Twenty minutes on the phone or an appointment at your workshop. We ask which jobs you want and which ones you get too many of. Afterwards you know whether this pays off for you, and you have been told the price before anything begins.

What the fixed price contains

The fixed price of 1,490 euros net is not an entry price that grows later. It covers the complete homepage with all six sections and the pages that belong to it. Anything beyond that, such as a separate careers section or town pages for several cities, is named up front and quoted separately. The full range is set out under pricing.

  • Homepage with all six sections in the agreed order
  • One page per main service, linked from the homepage
  • Enquiry form with the fields that spare you the follow-up questions
  • Contact page with directions, hours and a note on emergency cover
  • Imprint, privacy notice and a usable structure to WCAG 2.2 AA
  • Half a day of photography on site, included in the project price
  • Setup on your domain, hosting in Germany from 15 euros per month, cancelable with one month's notice to the end of the month, no minimum term
  • One round of corrections after sign-off, at no extra charge

Scope: what this homepage is and what it is not

A good homepage clears up misunderstandings, it does not create demand out of nothing. If nobody in your region is looking for your trade, no structure will change that. What it does do: it sorts the enquiries that arrive anyway, and it keeps people from ringing the second firm in the results list. Anyone who also wants to appear in local search needs a business profile and content per town, see SEO for tradespeople.

Three routes to a homepage

What the usual routes mean for a trade business. Without names, because this is about how something is built, not about providers.

Website builder, done yourself

  • Not included: Templates are meant for every sector and made for none
  • Not included: Town and service area rarely appear in the first screen
  • Not included: Images usually go in unprocessed and slow the page down
  • Not included: Upkeep stays with the boss, mostly after hours
recommended

Our homepage for trade businesses

  • Included: Six sections in the order people actually ask
  • Included: Trade, town and radius on screen without scrolling
  • Included: Your own project photos from the session on site
  • Included: A form that asks for trade, location and timeframe
  • Included: Fixed price from 1,490 euros net, agreed before the project starts

A general web agency

  • Not included: Rarely knows a building site from close up
  • Not included: References often stay a gallery without any details
  • Not included: The price is frequently settled only after the effort
  • Not included: Recruiting as a second audience is seldom considered

What this page is not meant for

This homepage is not an online shop and no substitute for a well-kept business profile in map search. It does not replace a job advert either, it only leads to one; what a careers section looks like is described under recruiting staff. And it is not built as a permanent building site: anyone planning to change content continuously should plan care in from the start.

Typical courses

Wrong enquiries
Starting point
The homepage said "your partner for all things house", with the actual trade buried in body copy on the third page. Calls regularly came in for entirely different trades.
Measure
Trade and service area moved into the first line, services named with the words callers use themselves, plus three sentences on what the business does not do.
Result
Conversations start on the right subject, and refusals for other trades fall away before the call even happens.
Unusable on a phone
Starting point
The site came from a time before smartphones. The phone number sat in the footer as an image, and the menu covered the whole screen on a phone.
Measure
Structure reordered, phone number placed in the header as a tappable button, images reduced in size and the menu cut down to six entries.
Result
Calls now come from a tap rather than from copying out a number, and the page is readable outdoors.
No photos of their own
Starting point
The homepage carried bought motifs showing tools the business does not even use. Finished work appeared nowhere.
Measure
Spent half a day on site, photographed finished jobs and labelled each one with town and year.
Result
The competence question answers itself while scrolling, and the business now has a photo stock that grows with every job.

Example, not a client project. No particular outcome is assured.
